“François 1er -  Le roi bâtisseur”

Illustrated lecture by

Lynda and Frank Kelly

7:00 p.m.

Renowned for his gallantry and courage in battle, François Ier became known as “le roi chevalier.”  He also deserves to be called a “roi bâtisseur” or “builder-king.”  With the exception of Louis XIV, no French king was more passionate about architecture.  His numerous architectural projects and his hiring of Italian artists to work on them accelerated the assimilation of Italian Renaissance style in France.  This richly-illustrated lecture will focus on the château of Chambord within the context of châteaux that preceded and followed it.   Reception and presentation: no charge and all are invited.

Lynda Kelly, scholar and historian is a member of the board of directors of the Alliance and chairs its
Léonardon/Magne Scholarship Committee, a schoarshipo which she received in the 1960’s when she was a student at Rice University (where she later won and award for the best PhD dissertation in the humanities.  Frank Kelly, who also graduated from Rice, is an architect and photographer.  Their lectures are always popular with the members and students of the Alliance.

15 mars/March 15th at 7 pm

The Apollo Chamber Players

Exploring French Impressionism

The Apollo Chamber Players is a non-profit chamber music organization that explores the intersection of classical and folk music and provides exciting, innovative and culturally enriching programs to a wide audience. While illuminating the ethnic diversity of classical composers and the unique folk sounds and styles imbued in their music, Apollo discovers and recreates lost, rarely heard, and culturally significant folk music through well-crafted arrangements.

This group is always much appreciated at the Alliance, both for the quality of the musicianship, and for their personal touch in giving background and context to the compositions.  This concert will focus on the luminaries of French composition during the  impressionist period.

No charge, all are welcome, and the concert will be followed by a reception in honor of The Apollo Chamber Players.
